Liev Schreiber, 42, recalled the early days of his courtship with Naomi Watts. Schreiber and Watts, 41, had just started dating when they were working on The Painted Veil (2006).

Watts had got Schreiber the part. But things got awkward when the on-screen lovemaking moved at a faster pace than the off-screen intimacy. He said: ‘I was chopped liver on that set.’

Schreiber has just opened his new play on Broadway, a revival of Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge with Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Hecht.

Schreiber, meanwhile, said the time spent away from his family over Christmas was dismal. ‘The kids went away and Naomi went away and I had one of those shotgun-in-the-bathtub holidays.”
